Episode 30 – Pawnee Saturday Night

Bill and Anne become painfully aware that TV season is drawing to a close, what with the end of Parks & Recreation last week, the end of 30 Rock and Community this week (well, at least until September) and only a handful of episodes of The Legend of Korra, Mad Men and Game of Thrones left in the hopper. It’s gonna be a looong summer.

Things are just as slow on the videogame front, which is why we’re playing (and talking about) Max Payne 3 and Diablo 3 this week. Also on the menu: The results of last week’s Legend of Korra iTunes season pass giveaway (congrats Brian Smith, and thanks to everyone who entered!), half-naked Rory Gilmore on Mad Men (noooo), peanut butter Cheerios, Lip Service, Dear Esther on the MacThe Rise of the Videogame Zinesters and the announcement of this fall’s deluxe hardcover edition of Finder: Talisman.

Episode 29 – Waxin’ and Milkin’

It’s been a week filled with ups and downs – the deaths of Adam Yauch and Maurice Sendak, an anti-gay marriage bill being passed in North Carolina, the delay of Bioshock Infinite until 2013 - but then the circle of life from the Lion King kicked in and a bunch of cool stuff happened: the President officially came out in favor of sexy gay marriage, all of our favorite NBC comedies got renewed and news broke that we’re finally getting the last film in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s Ice Cream Trilogy.

We balance all that news out with talk about Minecraft on Xbox Live, Anne’s new favorite show, Lip Service, and a nod to one of history’s greatest women, Julie D’Aubigny.

  • Intro: “Egg Man” – The Beastie Boys
  • Break: “Ask For Janice” – The Beastie Boys
  • Outro: “Sounds of Science” – The Beastie Boys

Episode 28 – Comic Book B̶o̶o̶b̶i̶e̶s̶ Movies

Bill’s seen The Avengers (no spoilers, we promise), and so we’re talking about comic book movies in general this week – everything from Popeye to The Dark Knight to American Splendor and everything in between.

Before that, however, Anne talks up lesbian romance novels, Bill recaps the Stumptown Comics Fest, and both of us swoon over Jennifer Connelly in The Rocketeer.

  • Intro: “We Are Sex Bob-Omb” – Sex Bob-Omb
  • Break: “Flash Gordon (theme)” – Queen
  • 2nd Break: The Adventures of Superman, episode 1: The Baby from Krypton
  • Outro: “I Am What I Yam” – Popeye

Episode 27 – HOLY CRAP WE’RE LIVING IN THE FUTURE

Anne’s finally caught of up Game of Thrones, and so we spend quite a bit of time yakking about demonic shadow babies and sexy queens who look like Mr. Bean before geeking out about the latest episode of The Legend of Korra.

Then it’s on the Geek Week in Review, where we talk about how technology is subtly changing our lives (and our perception of the nature of some forms of entertainment).

Episode 26 – Wizard People

Anne and Bill take a break from Witching to talk about which Hogwarts houses they’ve been sorted into (and Pottermore in general), Anne’s struggles with writing a gay romance novel, how Game of Thrones may be a better TV show than a book series, Mad Men’s knockout “thematic short story episodes“, Meredith Gran’s Marceline-centric Adventure Time spin-off comic series, Roger Langridge’s new Popeye comic, and Studio Ghibli movies on Blu-Ray.

Then we wrap things up with some Last Airbender-centric listener feedback (special thanks to Kel McDonald for the link to the A:TLA Annotations Tumblr).

  • Intro:Wizard People, Dear Reader” by Brad Neely
  • Break: “Kaze No Toorimichi” (from My Neighbor Totoro) by Joe Hisaichi
  • Outro: “Daddy, Why Did You Eat My Fries” (from Adventure Time) by Rebecca Sugar and Olivia Olson

Episode 25 – Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

Between Friday the 13th and the almost-100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic we’re surprised we didn’t get run over by an iceberg driven by a black cat while recording this episode. We thank our lucky stars by chatting about the origin of Friday the 13th, Anne’s semi-disasterous outing to see Cirque du Soleil (and her resulting commitment to hit a gym), Dan Simmons’ Hyperion, LaLaLand Record’s re-issue of the Hook soundtrack, the Looper trailer, cereal marshmallows, Ron Sworschach, the “I Know That Voice” documentary and the Talkin’ Tunes podcast.

Then it’s on to this week’s main topic where we implore everyone on the planet to give Avatar: The Last Airbender (or it’s sequel series, The Legend of Korra) a try. We specifically delve into why we dig that universe so much – its wit, the strong female characters, multicultural cast, solid world-building, great sibling dynamics and, well, Lin Bei Fong.

  • Intro: “The Legend of Korra Main Theme” – The Track Team
  • Break: “Hittin’ On All Sixes” – The Track Team
  • Outro: “Avatar – End Credits” – The Track Team

Episode 24 – Sex Slave Army

Our experiment to create a shorter podcast by not talking about a specific theme fails miserably as we spend over 2 hours talking about Anne’s Big Gay Easter, Dylan being nominated for an Eisner award, how Saints Row 3 is one of the best sandbox games ever made (aside from one sex slave-filled mission that squicked Anne out), dumb people at the theatre, Bill’s redesigned storefront and Bioware/EA’s decision to flesh out Mass Effect 3′s crummy ending(s).

  • Intro: “Power” by Kanye West (featuring Dwele)
  • Break: Kid Icarus: Uprising ‘solo’ menu music by Motoi Sakuraba
  • Outro: “Easter Parade” as sung by Bing Crosby
